What can you do to boost your immune system?

The human body consists of trillions of cells. These cells work together to form organs and tissues that perform specific functions. One cell is replaced by another when it dies. Cells also communicate with each other using chemical signals called hormones. Hormones regulate all bodily processes, from growth and development to metabolism and immunity.

Hormones are chemicals secreted by glands throughout the body. They travel through our bloodstream and act as messengers, controlling how our bodies function. Some hormones are produced within the body while others are externally manufactured.

When a hormone-producing gland releases their contents into the bloodstream, hormone production begins. Once hormones have been released, they travel through the body until reaching their target organ. Some hormones are only active for a brief time. Others hormones are more active and have a longer life expectancy. They can still influence the body's functions long after they are eliminated from the bloodstream.

Some hormones can be produced in large amounts. Others are produced in small amounts.

Some hormones are made at certain times in our lives. For example, estrogen is made during puberty. Estrogen helps women develop breasts, maintain bone density, and prevent osteoporosis. It also promotes hair growth and keeps skin smooth and soft.
